Recognized multiple times as one of America’s “Best Places to Live” by Money Magazine, Westerville, OH provides residents with over 40 community parks and natural recreation spaces and peaceful living. This community is home to just shy of 40,000 people, so you can have the feeling of a bustling metropolitan area and still enjoy a small-town feel. Westerville, OH, has a rich history dating back to 1806, when the first settlers immigrated from Connecticut to start a new life and home that we have the privilege of enjoying up to now.
The city’s namesake, the Westervelt Brothers, traveled from New York in 1816 – at the time, its name was Blendon Township and was home to only 900 people, if you can believe it. What was so special about the Westervelt’s that the town was named after them? One of the reasons is that the Westervelt brothers donated land for the construction of a new school for the township, the Blendon Young Men’s Seminary. The town multiplied from then on, and by 1840, a post office was named Westerville in honor of the two generous brothers. Although the Seminary did not exist for very long, the town continued to grow, and even then, represented the progressive values that Westerville, OH, upholds today.
Residents of Westerville – even in the 1850s – supported abolitionist values and also participated in the Underground Railroad! Not all of its history is peachy-keen, however: Westerville residents became notorious
for supporting the prohibition as well. So much so, that the first beer served in Uptown Westerville since 1933, was in 2006.
Westerville, OH, is one of the fastest-growing regions in the country, and along with that growth comes excellent job creation as well. The city is located only 10 miles away from the airport and Ohio’s state capital, Columbus. Excellent utilities and other city resources make this town a fantastic place to call home.
